Customer Reviews

Traffic update worked
The GOOD: I took a 3 hour trip to southern PA at the start of Labor Day weekend. I chose the fastest route but fully expected delays due to traffic and construction. The Tom Tom 340TM rerouted several times during the trip to faster routes. I arrived ahead of schedule.

The BAD: Downloading the new updated software and maps took a very long time (hours). A few times questions popped up on the Tom Tom requiring a yes/know decision, only the question was in a foreign language. I had to do an internet search to find a translation. This happened twice with different languages each time.

The UGLY: The time to reach customer service took a very long time (>1 hour)to reach only to be disconnected, then another hour wait again. I didn't get much help but eventually got the system to begin the download on my own after the foreign language question got answered. I got an email a couple later saying they considered the problem had been resolved??

Despite the long update and lack of timely customer service, the unit did perform well and comes recommended. Side Note, in other posts I learned that the XL340TM is customizable whereas the XL350 is a stripped down simplified version. I chose the XL340TM version for the many customizable features, as well as lifetime map and traffic updates.

Suction Cup + Warranty is the only flaw
I loved my TomTom initially. The problem I encountered was ultimately with the warranty & the suction cup. After a few months, the suction cup failed, the device fell and the screen cracked. The touch-screen no longer worked with a large crack in it, so I called TomTom since I thought it would be under warranty.
Their customer service is poor when it comes to questions regarding warranties. I spoke to a handful of people and they kept repeating the same thing "I can't help you, the screen is not under warranty." It's an awful policy to have the only fragile exterior portion of the device not under warranty. I tried to explain, that my real issue was with the suction cup and the crack in the screen was just a side-effect of a failing suction cup, but they wouldn't help. "I can't help you, the screen is not under warranty" made up 75% of the sentences that they used when talking to me.
I don't know how their competitors are, but if I decide to buy another GPS, I am going to stay away from TomTom. The internal parts are good, but the external hardware is a joke and the fragility of the device, coupled with a poor suction cup, and a warranty that doesn't protect the consumer very well made me want to share my story.

Garmin is sadly better
I was debating on getting this because there are so many options but the reviews led me to tom tom. after using it for a few months the tom tom is nice and easy however searching locations is troublesome. Because the touch screen needs work. It is more like a palm pilot touch screen then an ipod. I used my step dad's garmin nuvi and it was much easier and much better because it searches locations as you write so it is much easier. the touch screen is much more responsive. If you are iffy get Garmin.

Great GPS hampered by TomTom Home software
I bought this GPS (XL340TM Live) for two features:

1) IQ Routes
2) MapShare corrections

The GPS itself is great, but the TomTom Home software was unable to download the Latest Map Guarantee (the GPS was new and not refurbished) and neither was it able to accept and process the lifetime maps activation.

Several calls to TomTom tech support were unable to fix the problems with this unit. The TomTom tech support was polite, responsive but not very useful.

I ended up returning the unit and purchasing an XL350TM for less. That unit was able to get updated maps and lifetime map code also worked.

The LIVE service is SLOW and with the lifetime traffic and my iPhone, it is quite useless.

TomTom no match for Garmin Nuvi
This is my second GPS (third if you include the Garmin Forerunner 305 GPS Receiver With Heart Rate Monitor). I compared this review unit with a Garmin nĂ¼vi 855 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator with Speech Recognition that I purchased earlier in the year.

I ran around town with both the TomTom and Garmin giving me maps and directions, and found the TomTom's timing and prompts much less useful than the Garmin's. The maps had much less detail - the Garmin shows bodies of water, side roads, etc., none of which appeared on the TomTom. The icons to locate nearby services were not easily discerned while driving. The menus and functionality were awkward.

I was not able to test the traffic feed, as my city is too small, so will have to post more on that after my son in Los Angeles tests that out later.

For many things, the weaknesses of the TomTom are addressed by the Garmin, but the weaknesses of the Garmin (and there are some) are addressed by the TomTom. But, overall, for maps, POIs, navigation, voice prompt quality, easy of use, total number of features, features of the web site for updates and interface with Google maps, etc., I think one would do better looking at the Garmin line, even with its faults.

Posting some photos comparing the two units.

Before purchasing any technical equipment, visit the manufacturer’s website to see the manual for the item I’m considering buying. Curiously, the only English-language manual for XL340S is a measure for the United Kingdom Although I do not mind spelling slighlty-(favorite color, center, etc.) or different words used in England (postcode road, round point, gasoline, etc.) and shows signs SpeedLimit that normalization of EU symbols (in km / h)), it seems incomprehensible that so-called manual for the United Kingdom, all illustrations are map of places in Holland. This leads me to believe they do not care enough about the U.S. market to produce a manual for us (USA). I had two main questions: (1) is an audio output that connects the device to your car audio system and (2) when the battery is low can use the device in the car charger (some GPS units you can not – you must charge the battery before using the appliance) – an important consideration on long trips. None of my questions have been raised. For all these reasons – and no details of the technology manual. I will not buy this unit – although possible. Sorry. Rating: 2 / 5

Right on the box, the device indicates that said the street names. What we have at home, download the latest maps from TomTom, etc., then put to the test. . . . No street names. . . Just turn left and right. It is through the daunting task of trying to contact by e-mail. . . I have read through screens to answer certainly was not on screen, then gave him the opportunity to send a message to technical support. Received an email back from them. . informing me that I should provide more details, etc. OK, this is not a problem if you accepted an answer by email. . Not that you had to go through all sorts and log back into your system and go through the procedure again. . I do not have time to play with these companies. . Took the unit back and purchased a variety of GPS. Rating: 1 / 5

TomTom GO 510 I was first. I used it for a year and a half and it stopped working, do not load or starts. I called Customer Care, said the warranty is over and you have to go to Best Buy to fix it and pay more than what you paid for the device. So I bought this Tom Tom XL 340, Amazon. I loaded the object for three hours in my car, I lost half a tank of gasoline to recharge your GPS. I continued to press the on / off, again and again to turn it on. When I finally came to light, never goes out. Do not waste your time buying this product, then return. Stick to another GPS company. Rating: 1 / 5

This TomTom is not as described. No mapping capabilities, as I said (several times) to support customers of TomTom. Rating: 1 / 5

I bought this to replace my Garmin Nuvi 265T, because I had TomTom IQ Routes for city driving. Bad idea. The TomTom can even automatically set the clock from the GPS satellites like Garmin. The text to speech does not work (yes I have chosen a computer voice, not a prerecorded human voice). U. S. Voice using terms like “motorway” instead of “road” or “road” and not pronounce the street names. He just says turn right or left, for example. On the positive side, the helper function tracks works very well. I see the reality of the highway about anything I find. The menus on the TomTom is very, very difficult to navigate. In my Garmin, touch me “Where?” and enter an address. In TomTom I have to navigate a seemingly endless series of menus. The software updates using the home includes software applications are a joke. I did not even arrive at the updated card before my unit ran out of memory. I tried to format the memory drive in Windows so I can just download the latest version of the software via the Internet using the TomTom Home software, but uses a USB port. An interface and has a serious stuttering problem when writing to onboard memory. This means that the format had 6-12 hours! Outrageous! I immediately get rid of this unit and bought an MSN Direct receiver for my Garmin Nuvi 265T. The real-time traffic is not near real time (updated every 30 seconds). I have heard that TomTom Go GPS units have zero problems, but most of them come with a windshield old school with a lever to increase suction as Garmin, Magellan and others. This means that the TomTom GO GPS are likely to get your windshield. . . while driving and you probably do have an accident. Frankly, I prefer to have a GPS that just works (Garmin) instead of having the voice of Homer Simpson give me directions (TomTom). Rating: 1 / 5
